Vocal lessons are given by Jill Nock in Port Elizabeth (studio and online) as well as South Africa and worldwide (online). Jill has a B Mus degree from Rhodes University with singing as her practical major. She has also studied with Conchita Badia in Spain.

Jill has taught singing for more than 30 years and has developed a reputation as Port Elizabeth’s most successful vocal teacher. She has often been heard on stage as soloist with the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestra in Oratorios, Masses and Proms concerts and the Concert in the Park, under the baton of the likes of Chris Dowdeswell, Richard Cock, Grant Hutchison and Tim Lees. She has also performed in smaller ensembles for Musica Rara, the Baroque Ensemble, The 3 Sopranos, A Little Company of Singers, Gentle Jazz and with the Aranjuez Duo, in Port Elizabeth and further afield.

She was lecturer in Music Education at Nelson Mandela University for 2 years and part time lecturer in singing there for 8 years, during which time she also opened her own teaching studio.

In January 2020 she was inducted into the Showtime Hall of Fame, “recognising many years of service to music and musical theatre and musical education in Port Elizabeth”.

 

 

Jill teaches both beginners and those with more experience, both adult and younger singers. She prefers younger singers to start lessons from the age of about 15 years, once their voice has settled after the changes in puberty – both male and female. (It is a well known fact that young voices can be damaged if trained too early).

All singers are encouraged to achieve their individual potential. Many have reported an increased self-confidence and have gone on to further their careers in Classical music, musical theatre and music therapy, both in South Africa and overseas.

Singers can choose to do singing exams with either Trinity College, Royal Schools or UNISA , and those wishing to do Music as a subject for Secondary School can also be accommodated with the approval and consent of their Music HOD and School Principal.
